Governor Gary Locke speaks to the Spokane Valley Chamber of Commerce

Washington State Governor Gary Locke addressed concerns for Eastern Washington businesses and residents at the Valley Chamber Luncheon this past Monday, April 9, 2001.

Of the major concerns were three main issues: (1) the energy crisis, (2) the drought and (3) the Seattle earthquake. The Boeing situation was also addressed.

He admonished all residents to do everything possible to conserve energy. He also said that a strong transportation system was critical to the success of business in Washington. He supports the continual improvements on I-90 and hopes that a Spokane north/south corridor will soon become a reality. Education is still a major issue that he plans to promote for Washington.

He assured us that he is doing everything in his power to make a "one" Washington state, not an east and west rivalry. The whole state of Washington working together is critical for its financial success.

Scott Morris, the new CEO of Avista Utilities, explains the dilemma of the energy crisis and why costs are rising at alarming rates.

He also outlines what Avista Utilities has been doing to hold costs down.
