High school cross country teams from University, West Valley and
Central Valley will compete in regional meets Saturday at Deer Park
Golf Course, as well as individuals from East Valley.
West Valley is in the 3A GSL/Mid Valley Regional meet, while the
other Valley schools take part in the 4A GSL/Big 9 Regional.
Saturday's order of races: 11 a.m., 3A girls; 11:30 a.m., 4A girls;
noon, 3A boys; and 12:30 p.m., 4A boys.
Cold and perhaps wet weather is expected for the meet, with temperatures
as cool as the 30s at race time.
The top four teams in each 4A division qualify for the state meet
Nov. 8 at Sun Willows Golf Course in Pasco, in addition to the top
20 individuals. Only the top three 3A boys teams and top two 3A
girls teams qualify, plus the top 10 individuals in each race.
The U-Hi girls finished with a 12-1 mark. Their only loss was to
Mt. Spokane.
U-Hi girls finish 12-1
The U-Hi varsity went 3-0 in the last head-to-head meet of the season
on Oct. 22 at East Valley High School. The Lady Titans defeated
Ferris 23-34, East Valley 17-46 and Clarkston 15-50.
Aime Dahnke easily won the varsity girls race. Leah Wilson ran really
well, according to coach Steve Llewellyn, as did Katy Hawkins.
"It will be real competitive," Llewellyn said of the regional
meet. "We're in the hunt in getting to state ... It's a team
sport."
The U-Hi boys tied for fourth in the GSL with West Valley; both
were 9-4.
U-Hi defeated EV 21-40 and Clarkston 15-49 on Oct. 22. Overall,
Ryan Mulvihill was fourth, Will Johnson placed eighth and Matt Engle
finished 10th.
The U-Hi boys are a dark horse in terms of qualifying for state,
teamwise. Ferris, Mead and Eisenhower are all nationally ranked,
and Mt. Spokane is very strong, according to Lanker.
"It's going to be very, very tough," U-Hi coach Linda
Lanker said of qualifying for state. "They're setting goals
for themselves to make it in the top 20 (individually)."
"I believe in these boys. They've overachieved," Lanker
said.
WV ready for regional
The West Valley boys tied for fourth in the GSL while the Lady Eagles
were fifth.
Both teams went 1-1 in Oct. 22 duals at Plantes Ferry. The WV boys
beat Shadle Park 21-36 and lost to Mead 19-40. The girls earned
a 21-34 win over Shadle Park and lost to Mead 21-37.
Curtis Fitzhugh ran very well, according to coach Jim McLachlan,
and finished fourth. Cody Tylock was fifth and Ross Tylock eighth.
"We beat their (Mead's) fourth and fifth guys, which was one
of our goals," McLachlan said.
Molly Cole won the girls race. Back from an injury, Kristyne Westerman
was sixth. Larsen Agee finished ninth and Rachel Cortez was 11th.
McLachlan said WV could battle West Valley-Yakima for the girls
regional title. Featured will be a race between Cole and Isley Gonzales
of Sunnyside for individual honors.
McLachlan said the WV boys season goal is to finish in the top four
and earn a trophy.
CV boys, girls qualify
The Central Valley girls earned a berth at the regional meet with
a 24-31 win over Gonzaga Prep at Liberty Lake County Park on Oct.
22.
"They ran great," CV coach Dennis McGuire said. "We
had to beat Gonzaga Prep to go to regionals as a team."
No. 1 runner Anna Layman sat out with an injury. Kami Burse and
Beth Schultz ran well, finishing eighth and 10th overall, respectively.
The CV boys were eighth among 4A teams in GSL and qualified for
the regional meet.
CV beat Gonzaga Prep 21-39 and Cheney 17-42 and lost to Mt. Spokane
19-39 on Oct. 22
"Everyone raced really well," CV boys coach John Preston
said.
Justin Wagner was fourth, Pat Swanson seventh and Sean Coyle 10th.
Preston said Wagner and Swanson have an excellent chance to qualify
for state.
EV runners at regional
Four East Valley runners will represent the school at Saturday's
regional meet. EV finished 10th in the boys and girls divisions
of the GSL.
Running for EV will be Keith Holt and Nick Atwood for the boys and
JoAnne Mayer and Ashlee Medley for the Lady Knights.
The EV boys defeated Clarkston 25-31 and lost to Ferris 15-47 and
U-Hi 21-40 on Oct. 22. Holt earned seventh place overall and Atwood
was 11th.
"We're going the right direction," EV coach Dave McCarty
said, but it will be difficult for Holt and Atwood to qualify for
state.
The EV girls got a 21-37 win over Clarkston and lost to U-Hi 17-46
and Ferris 18-42. Mayer earned sixth place overall.
