It's going down to the wire for a pair of Valley-area campaigns.

Joanna Klegin, the incumbent of the Liberty Lake City Council, held a scant eight-vote lead over challenger Odin Langford for Position 5 as of Wednesday. Klegin - who is hanging on 338 votes to Langford's 330 - was the only council member in that city who was challenged in Tuesday's election.

There's also a tight race in Fire District 1, which serves the majority of the Spokane Valley. Monte Nesbitt leads John Haley 5,678 votes to 5,641 to replace Tom Gregory as fire commissioner in Pos. 3.

Absentee ballots, which could swing either election, were counted again yesterday. Both races won't be officially decided until Nov. 19, when the election is certified.

In other election news, incumbent Frank Boyle successfully fended off challenger Doug Smith for a slot on the Liberty Lake Sewer and Water District board. Boyle took over 70 percent of the vote.

Kay Bryant's 12 years as a school board member in the Central Valley School District will come to an end as she lost to challenger Debra Long, who came away with 54 percent of votes cast.

Back in Fire District 1, incumbent Joe Dawson defeated Melissa Archer 6,997 votes to her 4,586.

In Fire District 8 - which serves the Ponderosa neighborhood and other areas south of the Spokane Valley - a maintenance and operations levy is stalled at 50 percent and won't reach the 60-percent supermajority victory needed to pass.

Also in District 8, Lee Boling bested Claude Sappington for the Position 2 spot. In Fire District 9, which serves northernmost part of the Valley, incumbent Patrick Kennedy held off challenger Don Harris with 53 percent of the vote.
