University High School won one match and lost two in the Lady Titans' first-ever appearance in WIAA/Dairy Farmers of Washington 4-A Volleyball Championship tournament last weekend at the Everett Regional Events Center.

U-Hi was swept by the Capital Lady Cougars in the first round Friday, 25-15, 25-20, 25-17. The Lady Titans stayed alive with a 25-16, 26-24, 25-21 victory over Central Kitsap later in the day. U-Hi was eliminated by Eisenhower on Saturday morning. Game scores were 25-16, 25-16, 19-25, 25-23.

Mead won the 4A state championship by sweeping Marysville-Pilchuck.
"Overall they played well," U-Hi coach Amanda Velasquez said of her team, after some "jitters" in the first match.

The coach said the Lady Titans were "fired up" after the first-round loss, and had improved defense in the win over Central Kilsap.
U-Hi started slowly against Eisenhower, but play improved.

"The third and fourth games the girls were picking everything up," Velasquez said.

Mandy Daniels led the Lady Titans with 17 kills and 18 digs in the match. Daidre Mendenhall had nine blocks and Kara Crisp dished out 34 set assists.
Velasquez said Mendenhall played very well and Crisp did a great job running the U-Hi offense.

There were four seniors on the U-Hi team - Molly Owen, Blayre Ditto, Brianne Baer and Tiffany Lektorich.

"It has been a phenomenal year," Velasquez said. "We had a lot of fun."
There was good chemistry among team members.

"That says a lot about the girls. They were very unselfish," the coach said.
