Central Valley and West Valley tipped off Greater Spokane League play with Tuesday victories while East Valley and University suffered opening-night losses.
Senior Jon Jeffreys supplied a double double, scoring 30 points and grabbing 15 rebounds in West Valley's 60-52 win over East Valley at WVHS.
Kris Henderson and Brad Johnson combined for 30 points as Central Valley disposed of Shadle Park 64-41 at CVHS.
Mead built a 20-6 first-quarter lead and eased past University 59-33 at U-Hi.
In other GSL openers Tuesday, Cheney upset Lewis and Clark 61-44; Clarkston outscored Gonzaga Prep 74-63; and Mt. Spokane posted a 60-50 win over Rogers. North Central and Ferris had opening-night byes.

Jeffreys tough on EV
Jeffreys, who was 14-for-18 from the field, was unstoppable inside in West Valley's victory over East Valley. The 6-foot-6 senior scored 10 points in the second period, sparking the Eagles to a 27-24 lead at intermission.
WV led by nine on two Kyle Arnold free throws, but EV got back within three on a three-pointer by George Hamilton.
To start the second half, WV went on a 7-0 run to extend the Eagles lead to 34-24. WV led 46-40 with a period to play. Jeffreys worked for 12 points in the quarter.
A drive to the hoop by sophomore Jye Lanphere got the Knights to within 46-45, but an Arnold three-pointer extended the WV lead to five. Lanphere sank another trey with 1:46 to go but Jeffreys took over - scoring six of WV's last eight points.
"We played really hard but not as smart as we could have," WV coach Jamie Nilles said. "We stuck with our plan. We made enough plays down the stretch."
The plan was to go inside on EV and the scheme was effective.
WV's defense was not consistent, according to Nilles.
"We played two good possessions then the third we'd have a mental error," the coach said.
WV had most of its 20 turnovers in the first half, and those miscues were mostly attributed to WV's youth.
"A couple of breaks toward the end didn't go our way," EV coach Drew Vanderpool said. "I like the way we defended but we didn't have an answer for Jeffreys inside ... We were a little undersized but we rebounded with them."
WV had the edge in rebounding, 40-36.
There were 37 three-pointers attempted in the game. EV was seven-for-23 and WV finished four-for-14.
"We had a lot of guys who can shoot the three," Vanderpool said. "We rushed a lot of those in the first half."
Tyler Hobbs had nine points for WV and Arnold added eight. Arnold and Arton Toussaint each had three assists.
Lanphere led EV with 15 points and Nick Nelson, who was in early foul trouble, added 10.
EV is back in action Friday at Gonzaga Prep. WV had a bye.

Free throws aid CV
Central Valley was deadly at the free-throw line in Tuesday's win over Shadle Park. The Bears converted 21 of 26 foul shots.
CV started very quickly, outscoring the Highlanders 17-5 in the opening period. The Bears lead was 32-13 at halftime.
"It was the first game with basically a whole new team," CV coach Rick Sloan said. "They played with poise and patience, and attacked the basket at times.
"We played solid defense. We have some things to work on but for the first game we were pleased.
Henderson netted 17 points to lead CV in scoring. Johnson added 13 points. Chris Barnes led in rebounds with eight.
Joey Pariseau paced Shadle Park with eight points.
CV host Clarkston on Friday and Sloan is hoping the Bears can contain Gonzaga University-bound 6-foot-9 Josh Heytvelt.

U-Hi has slow start
U-Hi got off to a slow start against Mead, and trailed the defending GSL champion Panthers 20-6 after the first eight minutes. It was 28-18 at halftime.
The Titans climbed to within eight in the third period but could get no closer.
"We had too many turnovers that led to easy baskets for them," U-Hi first-year coach Marty Jessett said. "They pressured us and we didn't handle it very well. It was the first game for a lot of our guys and we kind of showed that."
The Titans committed 21 turnovers, most of them in the first and fourth quarters.
Mead won the board battle, and U-Hi had only 21 rebounds.
"They were more physical than we were," Jessett said. "They're real athletic and real physical."
Mead was 14-for-20 from the free-throw line, and U-Hi made four of eight.
Calvin Jurich led U-Hi with eight points. Jay Tulley, who hit three three-pointers, paced Mead with 15 points. Alex Martin added 12 points and Michael Friedrichs had 11.
U-Hi host Rogers on Friday. The Pirates have a new head coach, Brian Kissinger, but a number of returning starters.
"We have to take care of the basketball, and make better decisions on offense," Jessett said. "We need to move better without the ball and rebound better than we did (against Mead)."

Jamboree games
Valley boys teams opened the season with a pair of 10-minute scrimmage-type games in a jamboree last Saturday at West Valley High School.
Central Valley topped West Valley for the jamboree title. CV opened with a win over East Valley while West Valley topped U-Hi in the first round.
In the game for third place, EV got a win over U-Hi.
"We played some pretty good defense," Vanderpool said of WV's jamboree games. "For our lack of size we did a pretty good job on rebounding."
