Freeman took advantage of 31 turnovers by Valley Christian to top the Panthers 59-50 in boys basketball last Saturday at Freeman.
Josh Grewe's follow shot with three seconds remaining gave Valley Christian a 46-44 victory over Class 2A Lakeside in the Panthers' season opener last Friday.

Freeman outscored Almira/Coulee-Hartline 25-8 in the pivotal third period and rolled to a 70-42 victory to tip off the season Friday at Hartline.

Both Valley Christian and Freeman earned come-from-behind wins Tuesday. Grewe and Jared McConahy sparked VC to a 52-50 victory over Deer Park at VC. Two free throws by Jon Dresback with four seconds remaining gave Freeman a 74-72 win over Lakeside at FHS.

On Friday, VC plays at Medical Lake while 3-0 Freeman is at Chewelah. Both varsity boys games tip off at 7:45 p.m.

VC win over Lakeside
VC shot 68 percent from the field in the opening win over Lakeside, but suffered too many turnovers, according to coach Steve Altmeyer.

"It's more precious than the way we treated it (the basketball)," the coach said.

"We're a young team. We have a lot of work to do," Altmeyer added. "I was pleased with our defense. Lakeside is a good team."
VC shot only two free throws in the win.

Grewe had a great game, according to the coach. The 6-foot-3 junior scored 20 points.

Freeman outscored VC 22-13 in the second period Saturday to lead 28-23 at halftime.

Altmeyer said Grewe was in foul trouble and played only about a quarter-and-a-half.

"We didn't have the intensity on defense we had the night before," Altmeyer said.

"Our transition game was not quite as potent," Freeman coach Mike Thacker said, in comparison to Friday's game.

VC missed 15 free throws, according to Altmeyer. Freeman was 17-for-27 from the foul line. Both teams shot around 33 percent from the field.
Shane Lewis had 10 rebounds and nine points for Freeman. Jason Bailey led in scoring with 10.

McConahy paced VC with 15 points and Grewe added 14.
With VC trailing by a point in the final minute against Deer Park, VC went to a four-corner offense. McConahy took the ball to the hoop and scored with 30 seconds to go.

Freshman Joe Grewe sank one of two free throws with :15 left for a two-point VC advantage. Deer Park missed a three-point attempt in the final seconds.

"We had three opportunities to close the door," Altmeyer said of the final minute of the game. "In the first half they (Deer Park) shot the threes so well.

We went man-to-man. That was the situation that turned the game around.
"We're not taking care of the ball and that's what's keeping teams in games," the coach added.

Josh Grewe led VC with 22 points and Jared Dahm added 10.

Scotties earn three wins
Malcolm Soelberg netted 11 of his 18 points in the third period of Freeman's win over Almira/Coulee-Hartline.

Freeman led ACH 38-27 at halftime, then took control in the third period.
The Scotties had 26 more shots than the Warriors, and shot just 33 percent from the field. Freeman sank 15 of 19 free throws.

"We're big on transition. The kids got up and down the floor," Thacker said.
Lewis had 15 points for the Scotties, and Dresback added 11.

A three-pointer by Soelberg tied the game against Lakeside. With :06 remaining, Dresback was fouled and converted two free throws. A last-second shot by Lakeside in the lane was off the mark and Freeman claimed the win.

"We always try to play the tough guys," Thacker said of the game against 2A Lakeside. "It gets us ready for league. We shot pretty well but I'm still not happy with our defense."

Freeman was nine-for-19 from three-point range in the win.

Soelberg, who nailed four three-pointers in the first period, led the Scotties with 22 points. Dresback added 19. Andrew Wilkerson had 11 rebounds and Lewis added seven.
