Freeman rebounded from a 74-67 opening-game loss at Almira/Coulee-Hartline on Friday to ease past visiting Valley Christian 66-36 last Saturday in girls basketball.

In its Friday opener, Valley Christian lost to Lakeside, 60-34, at home.
On Tuesday, Freeman stepped up a class to 2A and topped Lakeside, 68-62, at FHS.

Valley Christian led Deer Park by nine points after one quarter Tuesday but was outscored 22-6 in the second period and lost a 48-40 decision.
VC plays a Christian school in Moses Lake on Friday while Freeman visits Chewelah.

Freeman tops Valley Christian, Lakeside
Statistically, Freeman was better than Almira/Coulee-Hartline in field goals made and rebounds, but the Lady Scotties came up short at the free-throw line.

While Freeman sank 12 of 19 foul shots, ACH converted 22 of 40 charities. Lady Scotties Kelsie LaShaw, Ashlee Taylor and Shannon Hinch all fouled out.

"We're still working on our press," Freeman coach Matt Gregg said. "We struggled with that. We were a little late rotating .... They're (ACH) tough."
Jessie DePell paced the Lady Scotties with 19 points. LaShaw had eight rebounds and Claire Moberg added seven. Kaila Floyd had nine of Freeman's 22 assists.

Freeman pounded the boards in the win over Valley Christian, outrebounding the Lady Panthers by 26, according to Gregg.
DePell and LaShaw each had a double-double for Freeman. DePell netted 26 points, collected 10 rebounds and had eight steals. LaShaw added 11 points and 10 boards.

The Lady Scotties led 25-18 at halftime and extended the lead to 26 by the end of three periods.
VC had 35 turnovers and Freeman had 22.

"We tried to force a lot of things," Gregg said. "The girls get out and they run and try to make things happen.

I'm pretty happy with how the defense played," the coach added.
"They were quicker and we weren't very smart," VC coach Doug Girdner said. "The second quarter they tore us apart.
Freeman was 16-for-34 from the free-throw line while VC sank just four of 16 foul shots.

Kristen Smith had a double-double for VC, scoring 14 points and taking 13 rebounds.

Freeman led Lakeside by as many as 13 points but the margin shrunk.
"We pressed the whole game. We picked up where we left off ... We're starting to trust each other," Gregg said. "Our bench is getting better."
DePell had another fine game. She was nine-for-10 from the foul line, scored 23 points, had seven rebounds and eight steals. Melissa Baker added 14 points and six steals.

Turnovers were a big factor; Lakeside had 34 and Freeman 23.
In the game, the Lady Scotties were 20-for-30 from the free-throw stripe.

There were 65 free throws attempted in the physical game. Lakeside was 22-for-38 from the stripe while VC converted 11 of 27 foul shots.
Smith led the Lady Panthers with 15 points. Glennda Girdner had 11 rebounds before suffering a shoulder injury the following night against Freeman. She sat out Saturday's game.

VC led Deer Park by nine points after one period but was outscored 22-6 in the key second quarter.

Girdner said his team had just one turnover in the first eight minutes but gave it up 13 times in the second period.

The Lady Panthers were 13-for-26 from the foul line, and Deer Park converted eight of nine free throws.

Chelsea Newman led VC with 14 points. Smith had nine rebounds, and Kelsi Apedaile added seven.
