Wide open is the best way to describe varsity basketball races in the Greater Spokane League a little more than a third of the way through the 2003-04 season.

The only two unbeaten teams are from the girls ranks - Central Valley (7-0 in league and overall) in the American Division of the GSL, and No. 1-ranked Lewis and Clark (6-0, 7-0) in the National Division.

The Lady Bears and Lady Tigers tangle only once during the regular season. That showdown is Jan. 27 at CVHS.

U-Hi (6-1, 7-1) is a game behind LC in the National Division. LC beat the Lady Titans last month, and the teams meet again on Feb. 17 - in the next to last regular season contest.

Clarkston (5-2, 5-2) is two games behind CV in the American Division.
In the American Division, the East Valley girls are fourth (2-4, 3-4) and West Valley is seventh (0-6, 0-7).

There are a number of logjams in the GSL boys standings. No one is unbeaten, making the division titles even more wide open than originally thought.

Boys races very close
First-year head coach Marty Jessett has led U-Hi (5-2, 6-2) to an early first-place spot in the National Division. Ferris (3-3, 4-3), Lewis and Clark (3-3, 4-3), Cheney (3-3, 3-3) and Mt. Spokane (3-3, 3-4) clog the next four spots - each a game and a half behind the Titans. Early leader West Valley (3-3, 4-3) has dropped into a tie for fourth. East Valley (1-5, 1-6) is sixth.

Central Valley and Clarkston share the boys lead in the American Division, each with a 6-1 mark. Clarkston is 6-1 overall and CV is 6-2. The Bantams rolled to a 73-56 win over the Bears in early December, behind a 33-point effort by 6-foot-10 Josh Heytvelt. CV and Clarkston meet again Feb. 5, at Clarkston.

GSL scoring leaders
Going into the holiday break, West Valley senior Jon Jeffreys leads the GSL boys in scoring at 21.3 points per game. Heytvelt is second at 20.4. Greg Spurgetis of Lewis and Clark is ranked third (15.8), and Central Valley junior Kris Henderson is fourth (15.6).

Other Valley players who are averaging in double figures in scoring: Calvin Jurich, U-Hi, 13.0; Jye Lanphere, East Valley, 12.8; Inderbir Gill, U-Hi, 12.7; Cassidy Laurich, U-Hi, 10.6; and Dylan Sattin, EV, 10.2.

Clarkston senior Abby Johnson leads the girls team with a scoring average of 16.4 points per game. Stacey Cox of Ferris is second at 16.3. Heather Bowman of Lewis and Clark is third (15.7) and U-Hi senior Jami Bjorklund is fourth (15.4). Central Valley sophomore Salena Leavitt is sixth (14.3).

Other Valley girls averaging in double figures: Reagan Pariseau, CV, 13.8; Angie Bjorklund, U-Hi, 10.3; Katie Storey, EV, 10.0; and Kayla Mainer, WV, 10.0.
