Juan Montalvo of Central Valley qualified for the 4A Regional Tennis
Tournament with a fourth-place finish in the District 8 4A Tournament,
which concluded Monday at Mead High School. Earlier rounds were
played at Mead, Mt. Spokane, Central Valley and University High
Schools.
Lisa Lowrie and Blayre Ditto of U-Hi are the girls doubles alternates
in the regional tourney. They will play if injury or illness prevents
one of the top four teams from competing.
The 4A regional tourney is set for Friday and Saturday at Central
Valley and U-Hi.
West Valley failed to qualify any doubles teams for the 3A regional
tournament Friday and Saturday at Sunnyside during last week's District
8 3A Tournament at West Valley High School. Mel Dossey will play
singles at the regional.
Gonzaga Prep finished first in district points among the boys teams
with 64. Mt. Spokane had 58. Central Valley was sixth (34), U-Hi
seventh (19), and East Valley tied for 10th (2).
In the boys division, Lewis and Clark was first with 71 points,
followed by Gonzaga Prep with 60. U-Hi was fourth (30), Central
Valley ninth (16), and East Valley 10th (13).
Montalvo earns regional berth
Montalvo, an exchange student from Ecuador, went into the district
tourney unbeaten in matches against GSL opponents, and suffered
his first loss to eventual champion Ben Gullickson 6-4, 5-7, 6-4
in last Friday's semifinals.
"Juan played Gullickson's game," CV coach Ray Peterson
said.
Montalvo came back to beat Josh Steele of U-Hi 6-3, 6-1.
In the match for the third and fourth seeds to state, Montalvo lost
to Logan Nopalsky of Mt. Spokane in two long sets, 7-6 (8-6), 7-6
(7-1). Montalvo led 4-1 in both sets, but Nopalsky rallied to win
both.
"Logan did a whale of a job," Peterson said.
Through the quarterfinals, Montalvo lost just three games in three
matches.
"He did a beautiful job," Peterson said.
Montalvo plays Wenatchee's No. 1-seeded player to open regional
play at noon Friday at CVHS, where all the day's boys matches will
be held. Friday's girls matches are at U-Hi. On Saturday, all the
regional matches will be at U-Hi.
The four in each eight-player or eight-team bracket qualify for
the 4A state tournament May 28-29, also at CV and U-Hi.
"I think we're going to give the Big Nine all they want,"
Peterson said.
Steele lost to Colin Sowder of LC 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 in the match to
determine the state alternate. In the second round, Steele won 6-0,
6-1, but lost 1-6, 6-2, 6-3 in the third round. Steele eliminated
Curran Scott of Ferris 6-1, 6-7, 7-5 in the consolation round before
the loss to Montalvo.
Hugh Severs of CV lost to Nopalsky 6-2, 7-5 in the second round.
"Hugh played exceptional," Peterson said.
CV's doubles team of exchange students Xavier Thomas and Jan Ingwersen
won 6-0, 6-2 in round two, but lost to eventual champions Mike and
Matt Dorr of Mt. Spokane 6-1, 6-0 in the third round. Thomas and
Ingwersen lost to a Gonzaga Prep pair in the consolation round.
Lowrie, Ditto alternates
In girls doubles, Lowrie and Ditto lost 7-6, 6-2 in the third round,
then stayed alive with a win over teammates Erin Clarizio and Kamin
Alteneder, 6-4, 6-1. That eliminated the worn-out Clarizio and Alteneder,
who were playing their third match of the day.
"They had to beat our other team to advance," U-Hi coach
Julene Osborn said. "That was hard."
After the win over Clarizio and Alteneder, Lowrie and Ditto lost
to the second-seeded Ferris duo 6-7, 6-3, 6-2. Lowrie and Ditto
won 7-6 (7-5), 4-6, 6-3 in a long match to determine the state alternates.
Clarizio and Alteneder won 2-6, 7-6, 7-5 in the second round against
Gonzaga Prep's No. 1 team. They were behind 5-2 in the second set,
rallying to win. In the third set, Clarizio and Alteneder came back
from a 5-1 deficit to win.
"It was exciting to see that kind of comeback," Osborn
said. "They played consistently and well."
Ashley Miles of U-Hi lost to Amanda Wong of Shadle 6-2, 6-2 in the
second round. Laura Woodard suffered a loss in a three-set match
in round one.
Lacey O'Connell, U-Hi's No. 1 singles player, has been bothered
by an elbow problem and lost in the first round of the district
tourney.
"She did have a really good season," Osborn said.
Katy Lund and Meagan Nuchols of East Valley won 6-0, 6-1 in second
round, but were defeated 6-3, 6-3 in the third round. Lund and Nuchols
were eliminated with a 6-1, 6-3 loss to G-Prep opponents.
Malena Izquierdo-Camacho of Central Valley defeated Tana Webb of
Lewis and Clark 6-1, 6-1 in the second round, but lost to Heather
Handwerk of Ferris 6-1, 6-0 in round three. The exchange student
from Ecuador was eliminated with a 6-1, 8-6 loss to Amanda Wong
of G-Prep.
Tasha Kummerzell of Central Valley lost to Kayla Clarke of Rogers
6-4, 6-1 in the second round.
In the District 8 3A Tournament, Josh Sather and Joe Staley were
eliminated in the semifinals with a 6-4, 6-1 loss to Cheney's No.
1 boys pair. Sather and Staley had won 6-2, 6-3 in the first round.
In girls doubles, Rebecca Powell and Kara Kazemba lost 6-4, 6-3
to Cheney's No. 1 team after a 6-0, 6-0 first-round win. Charlotte
Whipple and Tansy Dougherty won their opener 6-0, 6-3, but lost
to the Clarkston No. 1 pair, 7-5, 6-4.
