As temperatures plummeted into single digits earlier this week, several emergency warming centers provided warmth and protection from the cold.

Three centers, including The House of Charity, 32 W. Pacific, Volunteers of America's Hope House, 111 W. 3rd, and the Salvation Army Family Emergency S.A.F.E. Center, 1403 W. Broadway, provide more than just seasonal help. These resources and others serve residents during times of need, regardless of the temperature.

At the office of Volunteers of America, workers tried to get the word out about the shortage of winter hats, gloves and other clothing. A number of area shelters are running extremely low on such items and are appealing to local residents to donate supplies and/or funds to help purchase warm clothing and blankets. To find out more, call Volunteers of America at 624-2378 or drop by your donation to the VOA office at 525 W. 2nd Avenue in downtown Spokane.

The Spokane Valley Community Center and Food Bank provides emergency assistance to individuals and families who need help for various reasons. To learn more, call Sheila Morley, the center's Emergency Assistance coordinator at 927-1153. The center, located at 10814 E. Broadway, is also asking for donations of winter coats and blankets.
