Citizens in Spokane Valley are going to see their tax dollars at work soon as a new fire station will be built at 32nd Avenue and Whipple Road.
At their regular meeting on Tuesday, Spokane Valley Fire commissioners agreed to allow low-bidder Meridian Construction to go forward with the construction of the new Station 9 at a cost of $1.2 million.
The new fire station will replace two medic houses, located at 11514 E. 16th Ave. and 17217 E. Sprague. The homes will be closed due to their inability to house large equipment and trucks.
Last November -- in order to plan for future growth, remodel some facilities and build new ones – officials at the Spokane Valley Fire Department asked voters to approve a levy lid lift in order to raise the existing rate of $1.23 per $1,000 assessed value for six years.
Voters approved the measure at just over 51 percent, getting the simple majority needed to get the measure to pass.
The fire department is planning to build a new Station 10 at 17217 E. Sprague, and also constructing a new Station 6 at 6303 E. Sprague.
Fire Station 3, which is only about 11 years old, needs to be relocated from its existing site at 2218 N. Harvard Road to be closer to Liberty Lake. The new station would be better position to serve that area once construction starts on a new Harvard Road Bridge.
Finally, the department is looking to find property to purchase in the Barker Road and Euclid Avenue area for a future Station 11. The station would serve that area of Spokane Valley in order to meet future growth. That station would hopefully be built by 2014.
The fire commissioners are planning to hold upcoming community meetings in order to discuss its future construction and service plans.
