The Spokane Valley Quilters Guild presented the Spokane Valley City Council with a quilt stitched by its members to commemorate the fifth anniversary of the city’s incorporation. The quilt was presented at a recent council study session by the guild’s president, Debbie Holmes.
“The effort put into creating the quilt is a great representation of the people who make up our city,” said Deputy Mayor Dick Denenny. “It reflects the heart, hard work ethic and sense of community we have in Spokane Valley.”
The quilt’s primary color scheme of blue and green reflects the colors in the city’s official logo. Two blocks of the quilt are stitched with the names of the neighborhoods that make up Spokane Valley. Blocks at three corners of the quilt recognize each of the city’s first three mayors. A fourth honors former Council Member Mike Flanigan, who passed away earlier this year. Other blocks are stitched with apples, representing the area’s past agricultural history.
The quilt will be on display at CenterPlace for the rest of the year. It is anticipated that the quilt will then be stored and brought out for special occasions and at subsequent anniversaries of the city’s incorporation.
The Spokane Valley Quilters Guild is a group of community members whose common interest in quilting brings them together to “share ideas and knowledge” of quilting, including participation in community service projects such as the commemorative quilt.
CenterPlace is located at 2426 N. Discovery Place, just north of I-90 between Pines and Evergreen. For more information, call 688-0232.
