The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention along with the Food and Drug Administration have issued a safety warning for peanut products manufactured by Peanut Corp. of America which are suspected to be contaminated with salmonella.
Nearly 500 people in 43 states, including Washington, have reported salmonella symptoms such as diarrhea, fever and stomach cramps after consuming the products, sold in bulk for institutional and food service industry use. Six people are believed to have died from the latest infections. The salmonella organism can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in children, the elderly and those with weakened immune systems.
The FDA has issued a statement emphasizing that “the list of products that may be affected is still being determined.” Both the FDA and CDC are urging consumers to refrain from eating any peanut products until every affected item can be identified.
The list of companies that have recalled products that may include peanut butter or peanut paste from Peanut Corp. of America include Wal-Mart Bakery, Hy-Vee Inc. and Clif Bars, among others. Recalled products should be disposed of in a way that prevents others from consuming them. Major brands of peanut butter in grocery stores are not part of the recall. For a complete list of recalled products, visit the FDA Web site at www.fda.gov or call Peanut Corp. of America, toll-free at 1-877-564-7080. More information on the recall and salmonella can be found at www.cdc.gov.
