First introduced by the state of Washington in 2007, the College Bound scholarship covers tuition at any two-year or four-year college or university, including technical schools or trade schools, and also provides a $500 annual stipend for books.
Students who qualify for the free and reduced lunch program are eligible for the scholarships as well as all foster children, regardless of financial standing.
Washington students in seventh and eighth grade can apply for the benefits, while a provision has been made in 2009 only for ninth graders to sign up. This month, two sign-up events will be held for students throughout the area. The first will take place at Rogers High School on Tuesday, June 9. The second sign-up will be held Thursday, June 11, at Lewis and Clark High School. Both events will run from 5:30 to 8 p.m.
Students must maintain at least a 2.0 grade point average, have no felonies and graduate from high school to receive the funding.
Deadline for the 2009 sign-up is June 30. Under the latest guidelines, this means June 30 is the last day eighth and ninth graders can apply for the scholarship. More information can be found at
