The next member of the Spokane Valley City Council will be quizzed along with three others next Tuesday night.
But just who that person is will remain a mystery until Aug. 4.
This Tuesday, the council whittled down the number of applicants it will interview to four out of 16. They are Frederick Beaulac, Ian Robertson, Diana Sanderson and Ben Wick.
Four others were nominated but didn’t get the necessary four votes to be interviewed by the council. They included Stanley Courchaine, Dean Grafos, Richard Mayer and John Tyson.
For his part, Mayor Richard Munson said he would like whoever is chosen to have the same characteristics as Steve Taylor, who vacated the Position 2 seat on June 30.
“Steve won by a significant margin,” he said. “That would be my choice.”
Still, the next council choice will have to receive at least four votes from the remaining six members to get the spot. Interviews will be held July 28 during the regular council meeting during open session.
The candidate selected by the council on Aug. 4 will serve as an interim council member until voters make their choice during the November general election. A special filing period for potential candidates will be held in late August. The winner of that election will fill the remainder of Taylor’s term, which ends Dec. 31, 2011.
Beaulac is operations manager for Hatfield Enterprises and served on the city’s Planning Commission since the city’s inception in 2003 to 2008. He is also a member of the Hangman Valley Men’s Club and attended Orange Coast College and Cal State University in Fullerton.
Robertson is a retired pastor with Spokane Valley Nazarene Church. He holds degrees from Nazarene Theological College and Nazarene Theological Seminary. He currently serves as chairman of the Spokane Valley Planning Commission and volunteers with a number of civic organizations.
Sanderson is an adult education minister/coordinator, who holds a bachelor of arts degree in math and a master’s degree in adult education and leadership. She volunteered on the Human Resources Committee when Spokane Valley incorporated and is affiliated with the Tri-Parish Committee for St. Mary’s, Good Shepherd Lutheran & Episcopal Church of the Resurrection and the Christmas Bureau.
Ben Wick, who was a candidate for office when Spokane Valley first incorporated, is an information systems engineer with Goodrich Aerospace. He is a graduate of Eastern Washington University and holds a bachelor of science degree in computer science. He is a member of the EWU Alumni Association. He also has volunteered with the Spokane County Interstate Fair and on the East Valley School District Superintendent Search Committee.
Those who applied but who were not nominated for interviews are Robert Blum, Ed Foote, Karen Fournier, Jonathan Jones, Robert Messerly, Marcus Poulin, Charles Reinders and Annette Remshard.
Tuesday’s interviews begin at 6 p.m. at Spokane Valley City Hall, 11707 E. Sprague.
