A four-person race for an East Valley school board spot appears to have settled into a two-woman run.

Kay Sieck – who trailed Bill Powers by three votes at the close of voting on Aug. 18 – has taken a 651-623 lead. While the votes won’t be certified until next Wednesday, all of the mail-in ballots have been counted by the elections office.

Sieck will be paired against Heidi Gillingham, who dominated the East Valley Director District 3 race with 1,175 votes. Guy Gifford, with 553 votes, was eliminated along with Powers.

The Spokane County Elections office will close the special filing period for the Spokane Valley Council Position 2 spot today (Friday) at 5 p.m. There is a $90 filing fee for the two-year unexpired term that was created in July when Council Member Steve Taylor stepped down to become the new city administrator for Connell.

The filing period opened Wednesday. At of this writing, Ian Robertson – who was appointed three weeks ago to fill the interim position by the council – has indicated that he planned to file. Also Dean Grafos, a Sprague Avenue businessman, has filed paperwork with the Public Disclosure Commission which demonstrates he is interested in challenging Robertson in November.

Also, in the town of Fairfield, there is a four-year unexpired term to be filled.
Anyone interested in filing for any of the vacant positions must go to the Spokane County Elections Office today before 5 p.m. Applicants must be prepared to pay the filing fee for the Spokane Valley post; however, there is no charge to file for the Fairfield council post.
