This is a big year for the Spokane County-WSU Extension Office as it prepares to celebrate 100 years! Technically, say county officials, it’s the 100th anniversary of the Smith-Lever Act that established the Cooperative Extension Service as a state-by-state national network for educators who extend university-based knowledge to the public. So, what does that mean? It means that the cooperative extension provides information and/or instruction on almost everything from growing tomatoes and raising chickens in your back yard, to livestock and forest management. The cooperative extension also provide classes on new techniques to effectively manage your water, alternative energy, advances in biotechnology, and marketing tips for your organic crops. WSU-Spokane County Extension programs also focus on building the capacity of individuals, organizations, businesses and communities to find solutions for local issues. On Thursday, May 8, from 3:30 to 7 p.m. the public is invited to an open house at the Spokane County-WSU Extension Office, 222 N. Havana. The open house will include Master Gardener Plant Clinic demonstrations, 4-H robotics demonstration, Second Harvest food drive, SCRAPS pet adoption/pet food drive. The group will also be collecting diapers, baby formula and baby wipes. For more information, call 477-2177.
