Spokane Valley Fire Department is teaming up the Liberty Lake Municipal Library and Spokane County Library District to celebrate American Heart Month in February with free blood pressure checks.
Community members are encouraged to visit these locations from 10 a.m.– 1 p.m. for a free blood pressure check and wallet card from SVFD Fire Corps volunteers:
- Saturday, Feb. 11, Liberty Lake Municipal Library, 23123 E. Mission Ave.
- Saturday, Feb. 25, Spokane Valley Main Library, 12004 E. Main Ave.
Information about heart attacks, free CPR classes and the Pulse Point mobile app will also be available.
“About 85 percent of our calls each year are for emergency medical services,” explained SVFD Firefighter R.W. Pegau, Fire Corps volunteer program coordinator. “We want to raise awareness of the importance of heart health during February by educating our community members about their blood pressure, as well promoting the opportunity to register for our free CPR classes. Most heart attacks occur at home and victims have a much better chance of surviving if CPR is started right away.”
Free Family CPR classes are taught by SVFD firefighters and paramedics on the second Saturday of each month. CPR is hands-only and can be learned in about two hours. The class is ideal for families and friends, babysitters, young parents, office workers or for anyone who needs a CPR refresher course. Visit spokanevalleyfire.com or call 928-1700 to register.
