Children's Home Society of Washington built its new center in Spokane Valley after research showed that most of Spokane's projected growth and family support needs fall in this area. However, the facility and CHSW programs are designed to serve the entire region.

"The Family Resource Center is a regional facility/ not just a Spokane Valley facility," stresses Wayne Rounseville, director of the Society's Northeast Region in Spokane.

"This location puts us exactly where we need to be to ensure access for children and families in the fastest-growing areas while remaining easily accessible to Spokane families and those in communities nearby.

Additionally, the Society continues to maintain offices in the Northeast Community Center, East Central Community Center and the West Central neighborhood to ensure ready access for children and families living in the city of Spokane. It's a beautiful site that we know will be a hub of family life in the region for years to come."

The $1.6 million center is built on land donated by the Inland Empire Paper Company. Funding came from a variety of public and private sources, including the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the Paul G. Alien Foundation, the Washington State Community Facilities Fund, George Frederick Jewett Foundation, Spokane County traffic mitigation, E.K. and Lillian Bishop Foundation, Westcoast Hospitality Corporation and Wal-Mart. Rounseville
says he and his staff have big plans for the full two-acre plot, including a childcare wing that will offer the families highest quality early childhood education programs they can afford.

"This region has a huge unmet need when it comes to quality early childhood education-focused child care. Meeting that need is critical to the success of the community overall and is a high priority for Children's Home Society," Rounseville says. The new center is the next step in Children's Home Society of Washington's long history of service to families in Northeast Washington. The Society, which has been serving children and families in Northeast Washington since 1896, established an office and service delivery
site in Spokane more than 70 years ago, offering adoption resources, family support and intensive services for families in crisis.

"The Spokane Family Resource Center is our anchor for our next century of service to every person touched by a child in Spokane. And that means every single person who lives here," Rounseville says. "This new facility belongs to the community. It's our new home, but more important, it's your new home too. I hope everyone will come out and help us celebrate."

Embarking on its second century of service, Children's Home Society of Washington is Washington's oldest statewide, private, not for profit organization serving children and families. Each year, the Society serves more than 38,000 children and parents in communities across the state through 38
service sites. For more information, go to www.childrenshomesociety.org.
